Archery on Koh Phangan

Budding Robin Hoods can try archery in Koh Phangan at First Bow & Arrow Club. Up to eight archers can practice the same time with expert tuition on hand for novices. Prices are reasonable at 150 Baht for 15 minutes (plus free tuition) and there is a decent restaurant and bar for refreshments.

Fishing on Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan fishing trips can usually be organised with many of the island’s resorts and  often are just brief longtail boat trips out to a few local spots with a handline. But there are also plenty of decent operations with quality rods and equipment with 20kg hunting mackerel or 10kg barracudas relatively easy to snare.

It is also possible to go fishing in Koh Phangan off the rocks at the end of the many beaches, so just watch what the locals are doing or enquire at your local guesthouse. But remember that it is illegal to go fishing in the marine park waters around Koh Ma.

If you desire a truly authentic Thai experience then head to Chaloklum Pier and join a squid fishing boat for a day’s labour. Big Game Fishing are a professional outfit who know the island’s waters well.

Hiking on Koh Phangan

Hiking around Koh Phangan is available all around the island and most people will embark on a wee jaunt between beaches at the very least. There is a decent that leads between Haad Rin and Haad Tien which is enjoyed by many people staying in the area for the Full Moon Party.

Another good trail is the climb to the highest point on the point of the island at Khao Ra, where views of Ang Thong Marine Park and even Koh Tao in the distance can be enjoyed. Than Sadet-Ko Pha-Ngan National Park, by Haad Sadet beach, also offers a number of trails to the island’s biggest waterfall.

The adventurous can take a motorbike to Haad Khom and take the two-three hour trek through rocky boulder-littered jungle to Haad Kuad (Bottle Beach). If you don’t fancy walking back then longtails back to Chaloklum cost 150 baht and then it’s another half-an-hour farther on to your motorbike.

Muay Thai Boxing on Koh Phangan

Thai boxing is extremely popular on the island and those that want to catch a fight have plenty of opportunities to watch Muay Thai in Koh Phangan. There are three stadiums in Thong Sala, two in Haad Rin and three in Baan Tai so you’re never far from a bout.

Look out for posters, flyers and passing songthaews advertising the event through blaring speakers. The price on the door is usually around 650 baht for foreigners and there are typically around six fights starting at junior level with the headline clash last of all.

There are numerous Koh Phangan Muay Thai gyms where tourists can learn the basics of the Thai national sport. Jungle Gym and Chorenrit Muay Thai Camp & Gym come recommended while Arena Gym & Muay Thai also offers yoga training.

Yoga on Koh Phangan

Yoga is offered at multiple locations including Agama Yoga, which is located in the northwest of the island, and has month-long intensive courses. Otherwise Haad Salad has developed as quite the Koh Phangan yoga beach with Pyramid Yoga Centre offering daily classes, workshops, retreats, teacher tuition, therapeutic bodywork, sound healing sessions, astrology readings and more.

There is also The Yoga Retreat which offers casual classes and a health-food restaurant.

Elephant Trekking and Safaris

There are many opportunities to go elephant trekking in Koh Phangan, with Phangan Safari offering half and full-day tours of inner jungle on the back of a friendly pachyderm, as well as offering snake, scorpion and centipede shows. Alternatively there is Safari Boat that organises day trips off the coast with snorkelling, elephant and monkey shows as well as big game fishing.
