Haad Salad travel guide for Koh Phangan
Only 20 minutes from Thong Sala by taxi, Haad Salad is on the west coast of Koh Phangan and a popular destination for those in search of a peaceful, laidback beach holiday away from the Full Moon Party crowds.
'Salad' translates as pirate in English and the beach is known by locals as the place where buccanneers took refuge in their ships, waiting for an opportune time to trade their stolen treasure. From November to April Haad Salad is perfect for swimming, but becomes too shallow at other times of the year.

Haad Salad guide - pirate hangout with natural booty
Although Haad Salad got its name as a plunderer’s hideout, it has now become firmly legitimate with some incredibly plush hotels. Haad Salad boasts an impressive reef only 150 metres offshore that is popular as a scuba diving and snorkelling site with a colourful array of fish and coral on show.
Haad Salad is also more commercial than nearby Mae Haad, and is also home to a increasing number of private homes (especially on the overlooking hills) as well as resorts and bungalow operations which visitors must walk through in order to reach the beach itself.
Like most large beaches on Koh Phangan’s west coast, Haad Salad has lovely soft white sand and surrounding calm water is perfect for exploring by kayak. It is also ideally placed near to all the more mainstream resorts of the island’s east and west coasts.
Nothing much goes on at Haad Salad during the evening and revellers looking for a nightly party will not find a great deal to hold their attention. Nevertheless, there is a decent range of restaurants and a few bars open after sunset for a quiet drink.
Getting to Haad Salad is easy with taxis making the short trip from Thong Sala and longtail boats also connecting the beach with nearby bays. Many resorts and restaurants offer free pick up/drop off so it makes sense to enquire when making a booking.
