Thongsala is the main hub of the island and so has many travel agents where you can find information about other locations on the island, hiring speedboats and long tail boat taxi's or booking further travel arrangements. Some of the smaller beaches don't have ATM machines so it's a good idea to stock up on cash, as well as mobile phone top up credit.
There are many car hire companies, but be warned that you must have an international drivers licence and that insurance isn't always offered. If you don't have insurance you will be expected to pay the total cost of any damage to the car hired and anyone else involved.
For motorbike hire the same is true, and you'll have to ask for a helmet. The roads can be muddy, rocky and treacherous on Koh Phangan and the police are coming down hard on anyone driving dangerously or under the influence.
